Description

TRADE UNION STRATEGIES IN THE EU TO ADDRESS GROWING SYMPATHIES OF WORKERS AND TRADE UNION MEMBERS TO VOTE FOR RIGHT-WING POPULISTS AND NATIONALISTS

Proposal elaborated by notus-asr to carry out a study on the Trade union strategies in the EU to address growing sympathies of trade union members to vote for right-wing populists and nationalists.

Aims to identify the strategies that are being implemented by Unions in four countries of the EU: Hungary, Germany, Spain and Denmark to counteract the rise of fascism and racism and the concern that there is a flow of voters from the unionized base towards extreme right parties.

The research hopes to give answers to those questions asked in the proposal:

  • Up to what point are European unions worried about the rise of the right-wing discourse?
  • What discourse should they use against this?
  • What actions and strategies have they put in place to curb the class vote towards ultranationalist parties.

Methodology: The study will be conducted by a core team of experts from notus-asr in collaboration with experts from Denmark, German and Hungary.                                                                                                                                 Firstly, a bibliographic revision to understand the reflections, studies and analysis about the issue in the last five years in Europe and in each country under study was undertaken. Secondly, fieldwork through semi-structured interviews of high level Union leaders from those countries taking part in the study with the objective to identify strategies and practices that compare the growth of the extreme right-wing parties and movements.
