Description
SHEMERA – EURO-MEDITERRANEAN RESEARCH COOPERATION ON GENDER AND SCIENCE: SHE EURO-MEDITERRANEAN RESEARCH AREA
SHEMERA aimed to promote the cooperation research about gender and science between the European Union and the Arab Mediterranean Countries: Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, and Tunisia. Maria Caprile coordinated this study in collaboration with Danièle Meulders and Sile O’Dorchai. The study examines gender equality in science from a twofold perspective: a balanced representation of women (organisation of science) and the integration of the gender dimension (scientific content). For the purposes of the project, science was understood in its broadest sense, including social sciences and humanities as well as research and technological development. The study focuses on analysing three main areas in the Arab Mediterranean Countries: statistics regarding research personnel, research about gender inequalities in science and gender equality policies in science. Through seminars in each country and a Euro-Mediterranean seminar, recommendations have been developed to promote gender equality in the area.
