Keys to effective hybrid working: results of the European report in which Notus participated
A team of researchers from Notus participated in the preparation of the Eurofound report “Hybrid workplaces in the EU: Lessons from case studies in the public and private sectors,” published on April 10, 2025. The study is based on case studies conducted in different European countries, in both the public and private sectors, with the aim of understanding how hybrid work environments are being organized in the wake of the pandemic and what lessons can be learned for the future.
The report shows that the hybrid model is not limited to allowing a certain degree of flexibility in terms of location, but requires a rethinking of the organization of work. The cases analyzed reveal that when tasks are well planned, team cohesion is maintained, and clear monitoring mechanisms are established, hybrid work can improve both productivity and worker satisfaction. Conversely, in the absence of clear rules and a culture of trust, the model tends to generate inequalities and coordination problems.
Among the most notable findings is the importance of social negotiation at the company level, which allows the model to be adapted to the needs of each organization. It is also observed that the companies that have been most successful in the transition have invested in digital infrastructure, in adapting physical office spaces, and in training their employees in communication and self-management skills.
The report also warns of certain risks: the possibility of differences arising between workers depending on their role or level of autonomy, the isolation of those who telework more frequently, and the overload for management teams, who must develop new leadership and remote management skills.
The participation of Notus and its collaborators has been key in gathering evidence, analyzing cases, and drafting conclusions. This contribution reinforces our line of research on the study of the transformation of the world of work and labour policies in Europe.
